Dr. Shelley Meyer Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist
Dr. Shelley Meyer is a highly trained and experienced pelvic floor physical therapist. She holds a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) from Washington University in St. Louis, and has been practicing pelvic floor physical therapy for over a decade. Her background in movement based impairments, taught at Washington University, created a foundation for helping patients adjust how they move to restore pain-free movement. And over the years, she recognized that treating chronic pain patients required a more holistic, comprehensive approach.
As symptoms linger for chronic pain patients, they start to affect other neighboring body parts and can alter your neurological system. By incorporating traditional pelvic floor physical therapy with medical therapeutic yoga and integrative lifestyle medicine, this approach as allowed her to focus not just on the physical impairments of my patients, but rather treat them from a biopsychosocial approach.
My Personal Journey
My decision to become a physical therapist stems from my own personal medical journey, which includes a diagnosis at 19 of an autoimmune disease, numerous surgeries, and my own experiences of trauma. Because I learned to navigate the Western medical system with a lifelong condition of my own, I believed I could assist others in some way as well. Each step that I have taken to heal and grow has allowed me to reflect and share these techniques with patients.
Over the years, these personal interests evolved into my specialties in pelvic floor physical therapy, medical therapeutic yoga, and integrative lifestyle medicine, among others. My medical philosophy combines the evidence-based science of Western medicine and the holistic healing of Eastern medicine in order to customize each individual’s treatment.
